The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is a U.S. Department of the Treasury agency responsible for administering and enforcing economic and trade sanctions based on U.S. foreign policy and national security goals. OFAC targets countries, regimes, terrorists, international narcotics traffickers, those engaged in activities related to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and other threats to U.S. national security. In cybersecurity and compliance, organizations must ensure they do not engage in transactions with individuals or entities listed by OFAC, as violations can result in severe legal and financial penalties. Regularly screening clients and transactions against OFAC lists is a key part of due diligence and risk management for businesses operating in or with the United States.
