In cybersecurity, 'Nitrogen' refers to a malware campaign first identified in 2023, which leverages malicious installers disguised as legitimate software such as Microsoft Visual Studio. Attackers use SEO poisoning to lure victims to compromised websites, where they download the Nitrogen loader. Once executed, the loader delivers additional payloads, including remote access trojans (RATs) and information stealers, enabling attackers to gain unauthorized access, exfiltrate data, or further compromise the victim’s system. The campaign highlights the risks associated with downloading software from unverified sources and the importance of maintaining robust endpoint security. Nitrogen demonstrates the evolving tactics used by cybercriminals to bypass traditional security measures.
