Paste Panic: Microsoft Teams Users Stymied by Mysterious Right-Click Glitch

A recent Microsoft Edge update has left Teams users scrambling as right-click paste vanishes from their workflow.

For millions relying on Microsoft Teams to communicate and collaborate, something as simple as pasting a link or image should be effortless. But late last week, a baffling glitch began disrupting routines worldwide: right-clicking to paste suddenly stopped working. As users from global corporations to solo freelancers discovered, the trusty context menu’s “Paste” command was inexplicably greyed out, leaving teams scrambling for answers - and workarounds.

The trouble started after a recent update to Microsoft Edge, the browser engine underpinning core functionality in the Teams desktop client. According to Microsoft’s own advisory, a “code regression” in the Edge update led to the context menu bug. Suddenly, the familiar process - right-click, paste - was broken. Instead, users faced a greyed-out “Paste” option, unable to drop in links, snippets, or screenshots as they normally would.

For IT administrators, the reports poured in fast. “I have multiple users on version 26072.519.4556.7438 experiencing this issue, including myself,” one admin posted on Microsoft’s forums. “Cannot right-click Paste, but CTRL+V and paste as text are allowed.” Others flocked to Reddit, confirming the problem wasn’t isolated, nor easily fixed by reinstalling Teams or clearing caches.

Microsoft quickly acknowledged the issue, offering a workaround that felt like a throwback: revert to keyboard shortcuts. For many, muscle memory saved the day - Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V on Windows, Cmd + C and Cmd + V on Macs. Still, the absence of right-click paste is a notable productivity hit, especially for users with accessibility needs or those who rely on mouse-driven workflows.

Behind the scenes, engineers scrambled to identify the flawed code and begin rolling out a fix. Microsoft says the patch is being deployed in stages, closely monitoring telemetry to ensure systems recover. But as of April 16, there’s no definitive ETA for universal relief.

The incident is a stark reminder of the fragile web of dependencies in modern productivity tools. A single browser update - meant to improve security or performance - can cascade into unforeseen disruptions for millions. For now, Teams users will have to keep their fingers nimble, while awaiting a permanent solution from Redmond.
