Living Off the Land (LOTL) is a cybersecurity term describing a technique where attackers use legitimate, pre-installed system tools and software to carry out malicious activities. Instead of introducing new, suspicious programs, they exploit trusted utilities already present on the target system, such as PowerShell or Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). This approach helps attackers avoid detection by security software, as their actions blend in with normal system operations. LOTL attacks are challenging to identify because they leverage the same tools used by system administrators for routine tasks.
