A gaff rig is a method of rigging sails on a sailing vessel, where the main sail is four-sided and hoisted using a spar called a gaff at the top. Unlike the more common triangular Bermuda rig, the gaff rig allows for a larger sail area and was historically popular on working boats and classic yachts. The gaff is attached to the mast and supports the upper edge of the sail, while the lower edge is attached to a boom. This configuration offers versatility and efficiency, especially for downwind sailing, but requires more complex rigging and handling compared to modern rigs.
