FM synthesis, or frequency modulation synthesis, is a method of sound generation where the frequency of one waveform, called the carrier, is modulated by another waveform, known as the modulator. This process creates complex and rich timbres that are difficult to achieve with traditional subtractive synthesis. FM synthesis became popular in digital synthesizers during the 1980s, most notably in the Yamaha DX7. It is widely used in music production, sound design, and video game audio for its ability to produce metallic, bell-like, and evolving sounds. FM synthesis is not directly related to cybersecurity but is a foundational concept in digital audio technology.
