Existential risk refers to threats or events that could cause the extinction of humanity or lead to the irreversible collapse of civilization. In cybersecurity, existential risks are typically associated with advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, cyber warfare, or large-scale attacks on critical infrastructure, that have the potential to disrupt society on a global scale. Unlike conventional cyber threats, existential risks have consequences so severe that recovery may be impossible, making their prevention and mitigation a top priority for governments, organizations, and researchers worldwide.
