EPIC stands for Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing, a processor architecture designed to exploit instruction-level parallelism. Unlike traditional architectures where the processor determines which instructions can be executed in parallel, EPIC shifts this responsibility to the compiler. The compiler analyzes code and schedules instructions that can run simultaneously, reducing dependencies and improving performance. EPIC is notably used in Intel’s Itanium processors. In cybersecurity, understanding EPIC is important because its unique execution model can affect how certain vulnerabilities, such as side-channel attacks, manifest and are mitigated. Security professionals must consider EPIC’s parallelism when analyzing threats and designing secure software for such architectures.
