DMA, or Digital Markets Act, is a regulation enacted by the European Union to ensure fair competition in the digital sector. The law specifically targets large online platforms, known as 'gatekeepers,' such as major search engines, social networks, and app stores. The DMA imposes a set of obligations and restrictions on these gatekeepers to prevent unfair practices, promote market openness, and protect consumers and smaller businesses. Key provisions include prohibiting self-preferencing, ensuring data portability, and requiring interoperability with third-party services. The DMA aims to foster innovation and consumer choice by curbing the dominance of a few powerful digital companies. It came into force in 2022.
