In cybersecurity, especially within the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) community, 'DIBS' is an informal signal used to indicate that an individual or organization intends to review, analyze, or possibly assign a CVE identifier to a newly discovered vulnerability. When someone calls 'DIBS' on a vulnerability, it helps prevent duplication of effort by letting others know that the vulnerability is already being handled. This informal process streamlines coordination and communication among security researchers, vendors, and CVE Numbering Authorities (CNAs), ensuring that vulnerabilities are managed efficiently and transparently. While not an official or standardized procedure, using 'DIBS' has become a common practice in collaborative vulnerability disclosure environments.
