A cryptominer is a type of software, often malicious, that secretly uses a victim’s computer resources to generate cryptocurrency for cybercriminals. These programs run in the background, consuming processing power, electricity, and bandwidth without the user’s consent. As a result, the infected device may slow down, overheat, or experience reduced battery life. Cryptominers are typically distributed through infected websites, email attachments, or bundled with other software. While some cryptominers are installed intentionally for legitimate purposes, most are considered a form of malware when used without the owner’s knowledge.
