A client secret is a confidential value, similar to a password, used by software applications to authenticate themselves to identity providers or authorization servers. It ensures that only authorized applications can access certain resources or perform specific actions on behalf of users. Client secrets are commonly used in OAuth 2.0 and similar authentication protocols to establish trust between an application and the service it wants to access. They must be stored securely and never exposed publicly, as leaking a client secret can compromise the security of the application and its users.
