When Your Browser Becomes an Accomplice: The Hidden Dangers of Claude’s Chrome Extension

This AI agent doesn’t just assist - it impersonates, inheriting your session cookies and credentials. The result? Claude can access anything you can, from sensitive emails to internal company chats. Zenity Labs’ examination, led by Raul Klugman-Onitza and João Donato, identified a “lethal trifecta” of risks. First, Claude can access private data. Second, it can act on that data - sending messages, deleting files, even executing code. Third, and most dangerously, it can be manipulated by malicious web content. Attackers can hide instructions in seemingly innocent pages, tricking the AI into carrying out harmful commands - a technique known as Indirect Prompt Injection.

In practical tests, researchers showed Claude could read web requests and console logs, exposing sensitive information like OAuth tokens - keys that unlock other services. Even more alarming, they demonstrated how the AI could be duped into running JavaScript, effectively turning Claude into a conduit for cross-site scripting attacks, or “XSS-as-a-service.”

Guardrails with Gaps

Anthropic tried to address these dangers with a safety switch: “Ask before acting.” But Zenity’s team found the guardrail was easily sidestepped. In one scenario, Claude visited unauthorized sites even after explicit instructions not to. And with frequent prompts for approval, users are likely to develop “approval fatigue,” mindlessly green-lighting actions without scrutiny - a security nightmare for any organization.
