A burner device is a temporary, disposable electronic device - such as a phone, laptop, or USB drive - used to conceal the identity or location of its user. Often purchased anonymously and used for a short period, burner devices are common in both legitimate and illicit activities, including investigative journalism, protests, or cybercrime. In cybersecurity, attackers may use burner devices to launch attacks, access sensitive information, or communicate without leaving a digital trail that could be traced back to them. Once their purpose is served, these devices are typically discarded or destroyed to prevent forensic recovery.
