A bootkit is a type of malicious software that infects the boot process of a computer. By embedding itself into the system’s bootloader or Master Boot Record (MBR), a bootkit loads before the operating system starts, allowing it to gain deep control over the machine. This early execution makes bootkits difficult to detect and remove, as they can hide from standard antivirus programs and manipulate system processes. Bootkits are often used by attackers to maintain persistent access, steal sensitive information, or disable security features. Protecting against bootkits requires secure boot mechanisms and up-to-date security tools.
