When a convincing video of a government minister promising crypto giveaways goes viral days before an election, the damage is done before anyone can prove it’s fake. In 2026, this isn’t science fiction - it’s the new normal, powered by industrial-scale artificial intelligence. As generative AI tools flood the Internet with hyper-realistic fake content, public institutions across Europe and North America are scrambling to defend the very idea of trust in official information. But are they fighting a losing battle with the wrong weapons?

In the last two years, the convergence of advanced generative AI and intensifying geopolitical rivalries has pushed democratic systems into a crisis of evidence. The global C2PA standard, already backed by tech giants, lets institutions embed immutable metadata and digital signatures in every official video, photo, or document from the moment of creation. If metadata is stripped away by social platforms, invisible watermarks and backup registries can still verify the file’s origin. Soon, integration with the European Digital Identity Wallet will let officials sign content with state-backed credentials, restoring public trust at a European scale.

The fight against synthetic disinformation is no longer about spotting the lie - it’s about proving the truth. As AI-generated fakes flood our feeds, only a radical shift to source certification can give citizens a reliable way to tell official reality from digital hallucination. The future of democracy may depend on it.
